Born in the USSR, Ivan Poupyrev is currently a Senior Research Scientist at Disney Research Pittsburgh, a unit of Walt Disney Imagineering. He directs an interaction design and technology group which focuses on inventing and exploring new interactive technologies for future entertainment environments and digital lifestyles.
In his research he is particularly interested in investigating interfaces and technologies that seamlessly blend digital and physical properties in devices and everyday objects. This includes developing novel tactile and haptic user interfaces, shape-changing and flexible computers, and tangible and embodied interfaces, as well as more traditional augmented and virtual reality interfaces. The results of his research have been presented at major international conferences, shown at exhibitions, widely reported in popular media, and released on the market in various consumer products. His book on 3D user interfaces was published by Addison-Wesley in 2004.
Ivan Poupyrev graduated from Moscow Airspace University in 1992 with a Masters in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. While working on his doctorate degree at Hiroshima University, he stayed for three years as a Visiting Scientist at the Human Interface Technology Laboratory, University of Washington, working on virtual reality and 3D user interfaces. He defended his PhD in 1999 and joined Sony Computer Science Laboratories in Tokyo in 2001. He moved to Disney in 2009.
